RUN, ‘TIL YOU REACH THE END

What was I thinking? It all started back in December when I was thinking I really need to do something to stay consistent at the gym because I need to lose weight and get back in shape. I’ve been in this bad patterning of working out for about four to six weeks and then nothing for three or four months. So I needed to find something to get me working out and not quit.

Then one of the non-profit group that I love to support, The Third Story, is going to have their first ever 5K race fund-raiser in April. That got me thinking, that maybe I should commit myself to run five or six 5K in 2010 starting with the one for the Third Story. It would help raise money for The Third Story, and it would force me to stay running all year to get in shape.

What was I thinking? I am so bad at running, and I am so out of shape. At this point I can still walk the 5K faster than I can run it. I still got a few weeks till my first run. If you would come to run/walk it or come or if you want to come to support/laugh at me, view the info for The West Side Stride 5K or view the flier.

I plan to be part of another race in late May and one in early August. I am trying to find a race for late June/early July, maybe one for late Sept/early Oct, and one for late Nov/early Dec. So if you know any 5K races in the Denver area during those times, let me know. I will probably try and run/walk them, too. That is if I survive getting in shape for the races and don’t collapse during the The West Side Stride 5K.

Seriously, what was I thinking?

TALK ABOUT THE TRUTH, MANTLE, OR RUTH

Here are some of these stories that I thought I would pass along as I found them interesting, relevant, or funny.

LOST Sermon:
OK, if you on Lost fans who has not watch anything on season six since you just watch it on DVDs, do not visit the provided like. However, if you are a LOST fan who is up to date like me who want your church to use LOST more, check out this story from the “Things Christians Like” Blog.

Aid Money:
I find it weird that I did not hear anything about this story till I read it in here in this blog. Seems like a big deal to me.

John Breaux Statue:
I mentioned John Breaux before in one of my Monkey Meditation entries before. However, here is a follow-up to that story with a statue being created of him and added to the city of Louisville, Colorado.

Glenn McCoy Cartoons:
Glenn McCoy has cartoons that have made me really laugh. I thought I would link to a few news ones that were really great.

  • Football:
Congratulations to Floyd Little becoming the third Bronco Player who actual beat the barrier at the Football Hall of Fame and got in. Maybe, some day Sharpe, Mecklenburg, Gradishar, and others former Broncos will join you. Maybe. It is hard to say as the Hall of Fame continues to ignore most Bronco players. I guess I should be happy the team will now have three players after fifty years, six Super Bowl appearances, and two championships.

    Baseball:
Spring Training has started for pitchers and catchers. I am so ready for some good baseball. Some early Rockies stories that am I excited to learn about.

  • The Rockies Might Honor Bichette’s Home Run that won the first game ever at Coors Field. I remember watching it in a hotel in Jackson, TN as I was there on business and I trying to stay awake to see if the Rockies would win it in extra innings.
  • I have to admit that I am bit jealous of Tulo. He is talented enough to get pay to play baseball and be one of the best, he gets a cool chant when he is at bat, and now he got to meet John Wooden. John Wooden is one of those guys I would consider as the one of my selections to that silly question if you could have dinner with three people with who would you pick. I would have to consider him, Abe Lincoln, and someone who is a great cook so our dinner is good.

    EBrizarre:
I am starting to really like visiting the site, EBrizaree once a day just to learn worthless information. Today I learned another reason I love living in Colorado:
    Bizarre fact #4026:
    Did you know…
Researchers don’t know why, but people living in mountain states eat 30% more cookies than other people.

    Babies:
Here are some congratulations to some friends/family who added new children to their homes. One of them is from a while ago, but I have not mention them in the blog. So I am going to now.

    • Mark & Judith Thomas – Their daughter was born in July 2009 – Their First Child
    • Ben & Rebekah Stone – Their daughter, Karis, come into the world in October 2009 – Their Third Child
    • Kent & Konya Martin – Their son was born in January 2010 – Their Second Child
    • Andrew & Brandy Swint – Their daughter, Emma, was born in February 2010 – Their Second Child
    • Paul & Jenn Faust – Their miracle son, Bodie, was born in February 2010 – Their First Born
    • Nate & Katrina Thomas – Their daughter, Avonlea, was born in February 2010 – Their Fourth Child
    • John & Terina Dutton – Who is about to adopted another son, Solomon. This will be their second adoption and four son

OK, I wanted to post a link to this front page article in the Boulder Daily Camera Newspaper. Not because it is about one of the many, many great things the church we attend is doing. I am posting it because on the video that is part of the article includes has about six seconds of the back of Lynzee’s head. To identify her, the back of her head is in a pony tail.

She worked hard helping with the dress fittings over three days. So it is nice to see the back of her head (from the 24 second mark to the 30 second mark) of the video for all her hard work.

WITH QUESTIONS I CAN’T WAIT TO ASK YOU

Happy Groundhog’s Day! The most romantic day of the year at least for me. It was eight years ago today, I ask Mindy to marry me and she said yes. So now, we can celebrate our love over and over and over and over again on Groundhog’s day.

For those Monkey Pen members in Kansas, I hope you had a nice Kansas Day over the weekend. I know a few of you get to enjoy it every year by watching the Groundhog Day movie.

Finally, this year is an extra special Groundhog Day. Today begins the start of the last season of Lost.
    What happen to Vincent?
    Who is Jacob?
    What is up with Smokey?
    Why is Walt special?
What is the importance of Hugo’s numbers?
Who is alive and who is dead?
    What is the island?
Will we be satisfied with the last season?

These are just a few of things I hope to get as gifts for this this Groundhog Day!

NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU GOT TILL IT’S GONE

Happy Anniversary to Admirable Thoughts: Writings of Code Monkey. February 1, 2010, marks the fifth of this blog. Every anniversary, I write a yearly review of the blog as a way to refresh our memories about why this blog exists. Also, I list stats about this blog that probably only I care about.

As always, feel free to leave comments, email me or contact me with the contact form about what you love or hate about the blog, changes you would like to see, or how this blog has changed you life.

    Reasons For The Blog:
I had a few reasons for starting this blog. One was because I figured it would be good to know how to setup blogs in case I had to do one for professional reasons since I do a lot of website work. Another reason for this blog was to help improve my writing and grammar skills.

    Titles:
After my first entry, I decided that once and in while, I would have a bullet point format of thoughts called Monkey Meditations. If the entry was not Monkey Meditations, the title of the entry would be a line from some song. Hopefully, it gives my blog a little bit of character to call my own.

There is a link that is in on the left side bar called Name That Title; so if anyone wanted to know what song the title was from, they could find out. Some lyrics get used for specific entry types and that is explained on the Name That Title page.

    Stats:

    • Entries:
      Type Past Year Overall
      Entries 52 332
      Monkey Meditations 7 56

The number of entries last year was down by 28. So I guess I was slacking some on getting some post done.

    • Categories:
      Type Past Year Overall
      Faith 4 41
      Family 6 54
      Friends 5 64
      General 20 106
      Hiking 6 42
      Music 2 32
      News 9 54
      Sports 21 130

Some stories where in multiple categories.

    • Entry Song Types:
      Type Past Year Overall
      Country 22 130
      Christian 12 88
      Rock and/or Roll 1 14
      Other 0 8

I do not include the special titles in this count.

    • Comments:
      Type Past Year Overall
      Number of Comments 63 390
Uniquie People Who Left Comments 10 34

Thank you for the comments. I truly appreciate each one.

Based on those signed up for the blog’s emails updates, people who have emailed me about the blog, those those leave comments, and those who use RSS readers to know when the site has a new story I believe there about 40 regular readers. So the Monkey Pen (what I call the readers of the blog — a name that came from the readers) grew by two from last year! We have continued to grow every year.

There maybe others who check out the blog now and then as well. However, I don’t have a good numbers for that.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule and reading this blog. I do feel privileged that you read it.

    YESTERDAY IS DEAD AND OVER

Overall, I am not a huge fan of Christmas, let alone Christmas Trees. I am more of a Groundhog Day, Easter. and Opening Day For Baseball Season kind of holiday guy. However, this year when I took the tree out of the house, I wondered why they don’t write a song about this part of Christmas.

It is the part where no one wants to tree anymore. The needles are falling off the branches and it needs to leave the house. No one wants take it out of the house and tie it back on the top of the car. When you finally the tree out of the house and on the car to drive and get to the city park to leave the tree, you see other people (it is always one person per tree not families like when you buying it) getting the tree from the top of their vehicle. Everyone is standing in mud in the cold and bitter wind and wondering why they don’t own a fake tree.

So the once proud and loved tree is thrown in a pile of other discarded trees.

For some reason, this year as I throw our tree in the pile it made me sad. I am happy to know the tree will be recycled and used for many other things, but it seem liked the tree’s time ended too fast.

Life like the Christmas Tree Time seems too short. However, with life, it is sad to see so many people’s time end so fast.

Probably not the greatest Christmas Song idea, but frankly Christmas is about the coming of redemption so we don’t have to be left wondering if our life was wasted and if we can be in Heaven when we are done. I guess maybe, I just been thinking more about it because so many friends are struggling with health and death and because we are using the book, Heaven in our small group

Here are some of photos of our Christmas 2009 Tree.

    ALL MY FRIENDS SAY

At the end of each year, I like to honor my friends that have blogs by linking back to my favorite story that they wrote this past year. It is just a way to support my friends and let them know I enjoy their work. I hope you take the time to click on the links and read about their lives and their thoughts.

  • A Day In The Life…
I like this entry because Silas is into Roctober mode!
  • Denver In Translation
How can his best entry not be about the birth of his first child.
  • Diamond in the Rox
Well, Todd only wrote blog entry this year, but it is good baseball info. I guess he was too busy winning our fantasy baseball league to write more than one entry.
  • The Journey of Writer Danica Favorite
I like this honest entry about something I believe is true of all of us in a way.
  • Josh Brage
Nothing like getting excited about Roctober in July!
  • My Random Thoughts
    A nice simple laugh.
  • Notes From The Morning Meeting
I like this one because you can see the power of Rick’s blog and what actions get done when he speaks.
  • Nikkel’s Notes
Like her husband above, there is only one link from their blog this year. Maybe, she was helping Todd win fantasy baseball, too.
  • Pretty Much The Coolest Family EVER
They got time in Colorado with some great family photos.
  • Stephens Family
Love the fall looking photos and a course Woody!
  • The Stonestead
He called himself the worlds biggest idiot not me.
  • Thoughts from the Birdnest
Erin made a goal in January and hit it in December. He then shared some insights into what he learned.
  • Win, Lose, & Drew
OK, I only play fantasy football with him, but I think to think of him as a friend. So here are the three entries/cartoons from his blog that are my favorites of 2009.

  • Happy New Year! May you new year be much better than the previous!

    MIGHT WIN AN OSCAR

It is a tradition of this blog near the end of each year to rank the movies I saw that came out during the year (2009). These are just my thoughts about the movies. If it is different than yours, that is OK. We can have different opinions, really.

Why do I put this list out? Well, no reason really, but I just to do it. It is just a yearly feature of Admirable Thoughts: Writings of Code Monkey.

I would like to thank the Jefferson County Public Libraries where I checked out all but one of these movies. It is nice to watch movies for free. Without library, I probably would not have wasted hours watching movies because I don’t want to spend the money on them.

    • Star Trek -Very Good, Creative and did well with keeping with the spirit and hope of Star Trek alive and rebooted. It was so good, Trekkie and non-Trekkie could enjoy this movie.
    • Up -Another great movie from Pixar. “Ball, ball, ball, squirrel…” It is like they used my dog, Rocket, as the model for this movie
    • The Boy in Stripped Pajamas -Great movie. One that can make you think of about how much we forget past evil starting with a little things like teaching our youth to worship and obey the current leader. I am glad our kids are not blindly singing praises for our leader. Oh wait…
    • Monsters vs. Aliens -Very funny, great flick
    • Taking Chance – I loved this movie about taking home a falling solider!
    • Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian -It was a lot like the first movie, funny and enjoyable. I guess those who learn from history make sequels.
    • 17 Again -It kind of reminded me of the 1990 movie Mr. Destiny. 17 Again had basketball and a messed up family life compared to Mr. Destiny which had baseball and a good family life and his age stayed the same.
    • My Sister’s Keeper -It may not be as good as the book, but it was a great movie even you can handle sad movies.
    • G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra -It did not destroy my childhood memories. That is good because knowing is how the battle…
    • Aliens in the Attic -Actually, kind of funny. Better than I would have guessed.
    • Inkheart -It was an enjoyable movie.
    • Knowing -Bold by providing us with no answers, but giving us the idea we are really in hands of Someone else no matter how much we know.
    • X-Men Origins: Wolverines -It was not too bad.
    • State of Play -Russell Crowe did a great of job of making a movie with Ben Affleck be good
    • Imagine That -Loved all the scene showing Denver.
    • Hotel For Dogs -Normal cute movie about saving dogs. I enjoyed it till I learned about how much damage the movie with those dogs did to the environment – http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/pet-dogs-damaging-environment-suvs/story?id=9402234.
    • Super Capers -It is one of those dumb comedy that was just funny.
    • Terminator Salvation -Plot was so-so, the character development was so-so, but there was a lot of things blowing up and good references to past Terminator movies.
    • The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 -Denzial Washington was great and the story wasn’t that bad.
    • Push -Felt like watching a bad movie rip off of the so-so TV show Heroes episode.
    • Duplicity -Not that good, but Paul Giamatti was still did an great acting job like normal.
    • 12 Rounds -Really, not that great of movie.
    • Transformers 2 -No real plot, lots of explosions and graphics. Frankly, it goes on the list of the stupiest movies I have seen, but not the worst.
    • Race To Witch Mountain -No witches, just a former Rock running around saving alien kids.
    • Body of Lies -Kind of drags on while teaching us that lying is bad. Well, ok maybe that is not what it was teaching us, but lets go with that idea.
    • He’s Just Not Into You -So-so movie, but it was a interesting take on multiple relationships.
    • Shorts -It is what I expect it to be, a silly kids movie.
    • Ice Age: Dawn of Dinosaurs -Not that funny. It should have stayed extinct.
    • The Proposal -Unoriginal and kind of slow and a little boring
    • The Soloist -Well, to be honest I was not in a great mood when I watched it, but still it bored me
    • Battle For Terra -Boring and a waste of time
    • Four Christmases -At least the last couple of minutes were funny
    • Ghost of Girlfriends Past -Not that good at all
    • Sunshine Cleaners -A very disappointing movie because everyone told me it was great. I don’t think it was great.
    • District 9 -It was suppose to be a movie with a message, but it does not really do that good of a job.
    • Public Enemies -The acting was strange, the music was weird, and the storyline was weird. Very disappointing.
    • Land of the Lost -Just plain stupid, and sadly it make the 70ies show look good.

    LEGEND IN MY TIME

Saturday, December 6, 2009, local legend Tim McKernan. You probably don’t know him by that name, we just called him Barrel Man.

As usually, Drew Litton had an great cartoon for him that I have placed below.

    RIP Barrel Man.
